Specialist support for families living with dementia

Families in North Tyneside living with dementia are reminded that they can benefit from local specialist support thanks to a partnership between local health providers.

North Tyneside Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), who works to improve healthcare and health outcomes for the residents of North Tyneside, commissioned Age UK North Tyneside, in partnership with Dementia UK, to provide Admiral Nurses to give specialist support for families at a time when they need it most.

Admiral Nurses work alongside people with dementia and their families, giving them one-to-one support, expert guidance and practical solutions when things get challenging or difficult.

Dementia UK provide Admiral Nurses throughout the UK, but worked closely with North Tyneside CCG to provide the service tailored to a more local level, following engagement with people from the local community who’s loved ones have been affected by dementia .

“Dementia is a devastating illness that slowly creeps into people’s lives. In the early stages many families care for their loved ones at home but when things get difficult they often don’t know what to do to help.

North Tyneside CCG wanted to provide a service for people affected by dementia to get specialist and focused help and advice that goes beyond diagnosis, right through to end of life and bereavement.”

Admiral Nurses work in a variety of settings, from communities, to care homes, hospitals and hospices and work with people and families affected by all types of dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, frontotemporal dementia and dementia with Lewy bodies.

As well as working with people in their own homes and in care homes, they now also deliver individual virtual maintenance therapy (Cognitive Stimulation) alongside virtual support groups around caring, bereavement and transitions to care.
